This year's pumpkin ended up on the compost heap a little too early - we put it in the brown rubbish bin* today.

Still, it used to look nice before it went all mouldy. I blame all the rain (and us thinking too late of putting it on the shelf where it would have been relatively sheltered).

*Yes, Germans really have multiple rubbish bins in all sorts of colours. Ours are a black old-fashioned round rubbish-bin for household waste, a blue wheelie-bin for paper, a brown wheelie-bin for organic waste and very flimsy yellow plastic bags for other recyclables like plastics. Glass we put in the big collecting bins a few streets from here.

Only it wasn't a Sunday, it was last Wednesday - when Germany celebrated re-unification and we drove to a small lake close to the border to the Netherlands. There was a brisk walk on comfortable paths around the privately owned lake. In its current form it was created when the local peat bogs were harvested, but the lake itself is much older. Since the 1920s it has been a popular destination for daytrippers - there is even a small motorboat that takes you across the lake if walking all around it proves too much for you. Which even a four-year old can do, with a little bit of whining, but there was a treat at the end: Probably the last time this year that we sat outside eating some ice cream.

My father and my stepmother celebrated their silver wedding anniversary last Sunday.

I've got some pictures for you - which do not show the happy couple or any other people but which nevertheless commemorate the day in some way:

Fóia is the highest mountain around and when you're in Monchique it is only a short drive up the road.

I'm not going to show you the car park or the radar station or the restaurant and souvenir shop (favoured by coach trips) and this time, you don't get to see the view. You can find that here.

Now with added cut - sorry! )

You might remember me whining about not having a real garden, only a paved yard which doesn't get very much sun because a) it faces north b) it's enclosed by houses and walls.

So, we're never going to live off the fat of the land growing our own vegetables behind the house, but we did a small-scale experiment this year with an apple-crate garden!

(Now that I've posted this, the heatwave will kill everything!)
