It was where the gods slept at night.
Henry the Navigator built the fort or so the story goes. It probably wasn't the seat of his school of navigators which is mostly legendary.
Wikipedia is not very helpful, neither in English nor in German, but the English version has a very niche panoramic view of the outside.
Sir Francis Drake destroyed it and then later there was the famous earthquake, so there are not actually that many original pieces left.
Whatever the fort's true history, the cliffs are pretty spectacular:

Then in the 1920s they found this mysterious compass rose made up of pebbles, but maybe it was a sundial because it has more than the usual 32 segments:
