Only it wasn't a Sunday, it was last Wednesday - when Germany celebrated re-unification and we drove to a small lake close to the border to the Netherlands. There was a brisk walk on comfortable paths around the privately owned lake. In its current form it was created when the local peat bogs were harvested, but the lake itself is much older. Since the 1920s it has been a popular destination for daytrippers - there is even a small motorboat that takes you across the lake if walking all around it proves too much for you. Which even a four-year old can do, with a little bit of whining, but there was a treat at the end: Probably the last time this year that we sat outside eating some ice cream.

Doesn't this look like some wild animal, a dragon even? I love spotting these things in nature - it's what makes the traditional Sunday walk appealing and keeps it from being boring.

A view of the lake. You can also rent paddle boats and rowing boats.

At one end you can find a watermill going back to 1447 - with two wheels, one made from wood and an iron one. The iron one is still in use today generating electricity.
The front part of the building though is new and while it is very shiny, it doesn't quite fit with the rest. But of course the restaurant and hotel that is now in the mill needs the space!

It's not only Portugal that has old doors. This one has an added sign telling you that are not allowed to take a boat out onto the lake without buying a permit.

This signage directs you to the boat rentals and tells you to leave your bikes elsewhere.

Walking back you pass the corn fields with some actual corn. The kid kept looking for a scarecrow and was disappointed that he didn't get to see one.

Berries, leaves and sun.
