In a way this is pointless, because I should just direct you to a website that shows you the same and more statues without the netting and in better quality. (All the pictures there can be enlarged by a click and there's more to see if you follow the links next to the picture of Mary with the baby Jesus.)

Still, I think I can actually show you some details of the portal and its amazing sculptures. (Did I say earlier that they're carvings, i.e. made from wood? I'm not so sure anymore!)

In my last post, I neglected to show you what is left and right of the tympanon. Actually, there are figures on all the walls in the entrance hall.

Here you can see some of them:

These are some of the figures on the left and the minster's girls' choir who were singing beautifully and raising money for a trip to Canada.

Here's a closer look at the statues on the right:

In the middle you can see Mary and Elisabeth and to their left a blindfolded personification of Judaism. The statue on the right is another depiction of Mary who along with Gabriel (compare the other picture) represents the Annunciation.

These are three of the five foolish virgins with their empty lamps:

The left side:

On the left are three of the wise virgins who are happily holding up their lamps, and then a representation of Ecclesia followed by the Three Wise Men.

Here are the Magi bearing gifts accompanied by an angel holding up a star.

I haven't got the time to tell you more about all the scenes shown in the tympanon:

A closer look:
