So, it's David Bowie's 60th birthday and the BBC provides us with sixty more or less curious facts about him - some were new and interesting to me, some decidedly odd, others slightly pointless.

The weird thing about it? On Saturday we watched a documentary about The History of the Curly Perm and that included a clip of factoid 11:

At the age of 17, he was interviewed on a BBC programme as the founder of The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-haired Men. He complained: "It's not nice when people call you darling and that".

We laughed, but didn't recognize him. I might have to re-watch that bit just to make sure it's really him. I also didn't recognize him in The Prestige even though I had read, but instantly forgotten that he was part of the film. I was actually quite distracted as I knew I knew the actor, but just couldn't work out who he was. I hate it when that happens.

Last night I watched a television/radio interview with Frances Schoenberger, a German woman who came from humble beginnings and went on to become "Germany’s first lady in Hollywood". In her job as a journalist she met many of the people who we perceive as celebrities and some of them are now her friends. In the interview she came across as very down-to-earth, warm and funny. I've read similar praise for her autobiography elsewhere.

Back in the wild days of the 70s, she was supposed to interview David Bowie and was waiting for him to turn up in his hotel room after a show. When he finally came in, she was already rather tired, but pleasantly surprised to see him without make-up, but in Birkenstocks. Apparently, he decided he liked her, too, so instead of the interview, they just sat on the sofa, drank lots of cognac, chatted and were generally being very silly. All the other journalists who were waiting outside and kept knocking on the door were sent away. There was some cocaine, too, and apparently he is a very good kisser. She declined to have sex with him though, because she was in a relationship at that time.

I'm impressed. And a bit disappointed, too. That's a man with serious sex appeal. Regardless of Bowie's star status, a situation like that might leave me in a bit of conflict. It's that one question: Would you or wouldn't you?
