A famous poet
Mar. 3rd, 2007 05:56 pmI don't know why my mother decided to make a tapestry version of a famous miniature from the Codex Manesse as her Gesellenstück, i.e. the piece of work you do to show off what you've learned during your apprenticeship. It belonged to my grandparents and now it is mine.
It shows Walther von der Vogelweide, the best-known of the Minnesänger sitting on a rock exactly like he describes it in one of his poems:
Ich saz ûf einem Steine
und dahte bein mit bein.
dar ûf satzt ich den ellenbogen.
ich hete in mîne hant gesmogen
daz kinne und ein mîn wange.
I remember that when I stayed over at my grandparents' place - and I used to do that a lot - that I could see him when I was in bed trying to fall asleep. He watched over me, but he also puzzled me. Why was his face so red? And what was that strange flag he held in his hand?
The original can be found here. He not only wrote love songs, but also political and theological pieces - in Middle High German of course, which is slightly different from modern German.

My father has most of her other works, among it her masterpiece (literally, she was a Master of Tapestry) which is huge and showing scenes from one of the stories of Arabian Nights. She did a lot of needlework even after she quit her job so we've got table-cloths, cushion covers, dolls etc.

Your mom's very talented. That's a lovely thing to have from her.
