It's break time and I'm walking around in the drizzle keeping an eye out for playground fights. "Miss, there's a dog running around here," a gleeful boy informs me. I look around, but all I can see is the usual menagerie of school kids. It's probably a new joke they're playing on the teacher. More children tell me about the unusual visitor, but there's still no sign of him.
Then I spot him, surrounded by a bunch of younger pupils. He's a sandy mix of some kind, still young, with a red collar and he seems quite friendly. He's wagging his tail, but he seems rather confused by all the attention he's getting and oh, the smells - he jumps up and tries to grab a bite of someone's sandwich. There's a circle forming around him and I don't know what to do. One of my colleagues runs past, but he doesn't even notice our guest. Then one of the older girls goes up to the dog, pets him and grabs his collar in a tight, but loving grip. "Looks like I've got a new dog, Miss." She smiles at me and tries to pull him away from the crowd closer to the gate near the river where he came from. He doesn't want to go though - there are too many people around him and now he's frightened. I'm opting for crowd dispersal, but of course, this is too much of a novelty to not have a look. They're slowly backing away and the dog walks a couple of paces and then stops again. We repeat this a couple of times and then someone tells me that the owner is approaching. She finally appears, pats her stray and re-attaches the leash. "Thanks," she breathes and then they're gone.
