Various stuff in no particular order.
Aug. 29th, 2006 06:24 pmIt seems like autumn has arrived - it's rainy and blustery one minute and then the sun is shining again, so you're cold and wet and then sweaty again. No wonder that I've got a cold.
Hooray for responsible journalism:
You've probably heard about the young Austrian woman who was kidnapped as a ten-year-old girl and managed to escape eight years later. Here are the first sentences of Natascha's statement to the media as read out by a psychiatrist (a German version can be found here.):
Dear journalists, reporters, dear global audience!
I am very much aware of what an impact the events of the past days must have made on you. I imagine how shocking and frightening the thought that something like this could even be possible must be. Furthermore, I am aware that you are somewhat curious about me and naturally want to know more details about the circumstances in which I lived.
First of all I want to let you know that I don't want and will not answer any questions about personal or intimate details. I will act against those who overstep personal boundaries towards voyeurism. Whoever tries to do so will have to watch out.
Contrast this to the headline in the Daily Mail: Sex slave 'pregnant by kidnapper'. They also manage to leave out the relevant bit about voyeurism out of her 'full statement'.
The national team's visit to our school was a huge success as was yesterday's welcome ceremony at their hotel.
That's all for today - I've got some work to finish.

Date: 2006-08-29 05:45 pm (UTC)Of course everyone wants to know about whether there was sexual abuse involved (and it is highly likely), but I can understand her reluctance to answer questions about that - anyway I think that branding someone a sex slave is rather intrusive and sensationalist.
