I live in a city with delusions of grandeur. It tries to style itself Little Paris, but the fact that the German word for village makes up half its name gives it all away.

Our mayor was deeply disappointed that our pretty new stadium, which incidentally has a roof built by his father-in-law, wasn't chosen as a venue for the world cup. To make up for it, he has devised a marketing partnership with New York with advertisement billboards which invite the locals to go to New York, because it's the place "where the world meets after the world cup". My freebie newspaper also informed me that similar posters are up in New York trying to lure New Yorkers to my fairly mediocre city.

Nevermind, I'm sure we got our fair share of world cup visitors in our Old Town, but even the owners of one of the pubs in our neighbourhood's shopping street have prepared for the foreigners and translated their menu into English. It's a very traditional pub with home-cooked food and serves exactly what you would expect. Sadly, the owners relied on babelfish or some such device without bothering to check a proper dictionary. Should a group of hungry English speaking world cup tourists find themselves stranded in my part of town, they would be able to choose between two varieties of shred: Viennese and hunter. Keeping the German word would have been a lot less confusing.

Guten Appetit!
