When he joined the class I was teaching he was a scrawny kid whose confidence had been pretty much destroyed. Whatever it was - a school system that didn't give him time to develop or teachers who didn't see his potential or a class where he just didn't feel welcome, he was glad that he had the chance to go elsewhere. Granted, this was a chaotic bunch of students but his teachers believed in him and the demands placed on him were less rigorous. In his quiet and calm way he became one of the most favourite students among classmates and teachers. His parents, originally from Poland, supported him and showed pride in his achievements. Despite some health struggles he worked hard and managed to go onto the Sixth Form where he blossomed. The worst loudmouths had left the school and he had a steady circle of friends. His deep bass (who would have thought he had that in him when he arrived as a skinny little boy?) became a feature of all choir performances. No one ever had a a bad word to say about him. Everyone liked him. There was a girlfriend in the same year, I think, at least for a while. When he left school in the summer of 2018 he was a young man with plans. I don't remember what he wanted to do with his life. Was he going to do some travelling? Or did he want to go straight to university or did he manage to secure an apprenticeship?
I do hope he got to see a little bit of the world. Today I got the phonecall that he went to bed on Friday and on Saturday morning he was dead.
