May. 8th, 2006 05:33 pmI didn't play by the rules of the interview meme, as I came in fairly late, so I only got two questions. Or is it because I'm so boring? Anyway, if you want to be interviewed by me, say so in the comments.
frances_lievens wanted to know this:
1. What made you decide to become a teacher?
I never sat down and said: I wanna be a teacher when I grow up. I decided on a teachers' degree at uni, because it meant I could study two major subjects (English and History) with some added didactics and pedagogy courses. So, naturally, I went into the actual teacher training at a school after I got my degree and I kind of liked it. There are lots of things in the profession that I find frustrating at times, but in general I love my job. And after teacher training I applied for a couple of teaching positions and - much to my surprise - I got an offer at a school I liked.
2. I met you on the BC&S, where everyone seems to have a favourite 'ship to defend. For some reason I think you don't have one when it comes to BtVS. Am I wrong?
Well, I'm not a shipper in the traditional sense that I expect that particular aspect of the storyline to happen in a specific way. I don't get angry at the writers.
That said, I'm fascinated by Spuffy and most fanfiction I read is Spuffy. So, obviously I'm not much interested in Bangel and I can't think of a scenario in which I would like the two of them to have a relationship. There are ships that I like more than others, but shipping has never been a major part of fandom for me.

Didn't I make you read some Githan once or twice too?
Is it your t-shirt?

Date: 2006-05-08 09:41 am (UTC)Yep, you could be right. I read quite a bit of other ships - Githan is among them. I dabble in a little Spander and Spangel if it's well-written and/or hot.
And no, I wouldn't be seen dead in that shirt. One of my students was wearing it last Thursday and I asked her whether she knew what it said. Then I spotted the mistakes. Then I asked her if I could take a picture of the shirt (but not of her). She said yes.

1. How's uni and how did the tv projects come out?
2. What's your earliest childhood memory?
3. If you had unlimited funds, where would you go on holiday?
4. What is typically English for you?
5. What is typically German for you?

Date: 2006-05-08 10:06 am (UTC)Uni is still going well, although I can't wait for this year to be over! I only actually have another 6 or 7 days in classes left now, but I also have 4 essays to do by the end of the month. As well as a presentation. *groan* The practical work went well though - the news programme got quite a bit of praise from the lecturers, and we're still awaiting feedback on the studio drama we filmed. I'm actually out on location filming tomorrow, if all goes well.
2. What's your earliest childhood memory?
Hmm. I have two, and I'm not sure which is earliest. One of them is my first day at nursery school, being shown around and playing on the climbing frames. The second memory is going with my family to buy our first dog, and picking him out of a bunch of other puppies running around and jumping on their poor abused mother. :-)
3. If you had unlimited funds, where would you go on holiday?
Unlimited funds? I'd go to a couple of cities on every continent. But more specifically there are a few places I've always wanted to visit; Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Tokyo, Rome, the Egyptian pyramids, New Zealand, the Arctic...
4. What is typically English for you?
A few things I suppose... old-fashioned pubs, Full English breakfast, cheesy seaside resorts, sarcasm, complaining about the weather!
5. What is typically German for you?
Hmm... well, I used to work for a German company with offices in the UK so I knew (or knew of) quite a few Germans through there. Generally friendly, very hard-working, straight-to-the-point (conversationally). In a cultural sorta way I suppose Germany makes me think of classical music, beer, the architecture in Berlin (loved my visit there a few years ago).

Good luck with the essays and the presentations and well done on the news programme.
I like your childhood memories.
So, who did you work for?
no subject
Date: 2006-05-08 11:03 am (UTC)I worked for the company in the link. It's quite funny looking at the members of the board that are on the website, as I knew a couple of them even though I was just a lowly agent on the phones at the time. :-) But thats because my Mum works higher up in the same company, and often has to travel abroad working with them.

Date: 2006-05-08 10:25 am (UTC)Hmm. I'm afraid I'm not terribly inspired today, so you might recognise some of the questions - though I think they are questions worth asking.
1. What's your earliest childhood memory?
2. What is typically French for you?
3. What is typically German for you?
4. If someone made you choose between the screen and the written word and you could only have one for the rest of your life (I know, I know those terribly hypothetical questions are nasty) , which would you keep?
5. Do you 'believe' in role-models and do you have any?

Date: 2006-05-08 11:07 am (UTC)1. What's your earliest childhood memory?
I think it's when I was 2, in a small apartment we lived at the time. I remember the living room, especially the corner-divan that was so cosy that in French it's called "un cosy"! When we moved to a bigger flat, my parents didn't keep it and bought a big couch.
2. What is typically French for you?
Protesting, talking politics around the table while eating, gathering around a table for meals, meals that last very long, champagne, baguette, hundred kinds of cheese...I know there's a food theme going on! Oh and the love of words and rhetoric..."la dissertation" is a typical French thing which explains why Villepin was so popular in France after his famous speech about Irak at the U.N, years before the CPE and the protest it caused!
3. What is typically German for you?
I'm afraid I'm going to write stereotypes for I don't know many German people and I never went to Germany.
Good quality products that last, comfortable shoes(Birkenstock of course!), nineteenth century philosophy, red-skinned tourists on the Riviera beaches, techno music, beer, maybe a certain pragmatism.
4. If someone made you choose between the screen and the written word and you could only have one for the rest of your life (I know, I know those terribly hypothetical questions are nasty) , which would you keep?
In a heartbeat, I'd keep the written word
5. Do you 'believe' in role-models and do you have any?
Not much actually. I believe in principles rather than in role-models. As a teacher I don't expect to be a role-model, for instance, I only hope I can help my pupils to think by themselves. As a parent I wish I could inculcate some principles in my children.

And I'm very interested in stereotypes and that's why I asked. And if you look at your French answers, some of them are in a way stereotypes, too.

Date: 2006-05-08 12:54 pm (UTC)Roots are what I get sorted by my hairdresser every month!
Music gives me rhythm...
Rhythm is every Catholic's nightmare!
I seem to have missed this questionaire, but I'm frantically going back through my Flist to catch up. As three of you are teacher, It'll be interesting to see if you all had similar motivations when you were younger. You all have a similar earnestness about you, a passion to communicate and a seemingly limitless capacity to remain calm... when, like the proverbial ducks, below the water you're paddling furiously!
You three are my icons!

Date: 2006-05-08 01:58 pm (UTC)Me? Calm? I'm not even good at projecting calm. On Friday I thought I had lost my wallet and spent a good 45 minutes at school frantically looking for it. I was ready to cancel the cards in it and had even found out the necessary phone numbers. In the meantime, the bf had found the wallet in my handbag at home. He had looked into it earlier, but didn't see the zip-up inside pocket, so missed it. His excuse: I'm not a woman. Handbags are a mystery to us men.
Luckily my students had a homework session and had so much work to do that I could leave them semi-unsupervised....
