Indulge me - I need a break from marking and that's the perfect excuse to go through my pictures and post some of my latest.

My town is at or near the top of all sorts of negative lists - most of them signs of deprivation - like the number of people on benefits, teenage pregnancies and so on.

But - and I wish I had proof of it - it is probably also one of the towns with a more than average number of public playgrounds. They are reasonably well-maintained and clean, although most of them have equipment that is very old.

This sort of frame dates back to the 1960s or 1970s. They were already around when I was a small kid (but then you couldn't count on a relatively soft and sandy landing, quite a few of them had paving stones underneath).

But as we jokingly said, we were happy if we had a Teppichstange, i.e. one of those metal railings you could hang your rugs on to give them a good beating every week or so before we all had vacuum cleaners. My grandparents still used to do that.

The best thing about climbing frames from the past? They are metal, sturdy and can be re-painted again and again.

The paint flakes off under the feet and hands of countless kids and then a new coat of colour is added. Some parts are worn shiny from use:

Others show the different layers of paint.

The kid loves the carousels best:
