Something I just have to rec:

Go and check out Life on Mars.

It's got a lot to offer. Produced by the team that brought us Spooks and Hustle this crime drama works on many different levels.
You get a look at Manchester and policing in the 70s - and thus you also get to hear some great music - but it's not dripping with nostalgia. Instead, the main character is as alien to this world as I am. Sam Tyler, played by John Simm (some of you may remember him from The Lakes), is a 21st century detective who after being run over by a car finds himself in what appears to be 1973. He is still a copper, but his belief in modern forensics and the old-fashioned and sometimes illegal methods of his 'new' boss Gene quickly clash. At the same time, he's trying to find out what has happened to him - coma? madness? method? Is there a way back for him?
His culture shock provides quite a bit of humour, but there's so much more than that. The cases Sam has to solve work on different levels - commentary on the past and present, but also on his character and his plight as a traveller in time. It's about how we can't ever see the future and that hindsight doesn't really help. It's about how we're stuck in our time and how much it shapes us. Oh, and there's a case of the week, too, and great characters.
I've seen the three episodes broadcast out of a total of eight and while I don't know whether I'll like how the coma/time travelling is resolved I'm sure that until then there will be plenty for me to think deep thoughts about and to keep me amused.
