Attack of the killer bee.
Apr. 8th, 2011 09:08 pmSo, I was hanging up the washing in the attic, as you do, and I was nearly finished, when I heard this almighty buzz by my right ear. I wriggled my head, a little apprehensively, and it was gone. Hm, I thought, is this a sudden bout of tinnitus? Or was it some big buzzy beast? There it was again, now by my left ear and I also felt something in my hair. I got alarmed, because the buzz was so low in tone that I suspected the perpetrator to be rather big - compared to it a bumblebee sounded like a baritone. Shaking my head didn't seem to help - I still felt the presence of something.
I clambered down the stairs, gingerly, what if the beast had a sting? And screamed for help. I had to wait for what seemed like five minutes and became a living statue, not daring to move. Then my saviour arrived, took a look at me and told me to wait until he'd locked the kid away and could deal with "that thing" on my back. Standing stock still, I felt the creature move, or maybe that was just in my imagination, and then finally K came back and used the handle of an umbrella to remove the creature from my left shoulder blade.
After that, it wasn't quite so scary any more, though it took me a while to calm down. The creature was huge, black and bee-shaped. It sat around on the landing for hours without moving and then K threw it out the window. Where it didn't move either, so I suppose the whole incident scared it even more than me.
A little googling suggests that it was a violet carpenter bee. Here is an article from the Independent about this honey monster.
