Failing to turn up.

Dear Student,

thank you for deliberately looking away whenever I came near you today, because if your eyes had glanced upon me, I'm pretty sure I would have turned to dust under your angry stare. I can take it, you can be as furious with me as you want. The cold shoulder approach is probably best for you now, as it keeps you from saying something that you would regret later on.
But don't blame me: it wasn't me who met up with a friend from a neighbouring school and then took the train to wander the shopping malls instead of going to school.
You knew exactly that I was waiting for you on Monday morning: after all I'd called your mother on Friday to tell her that you had to come in early because you'd skipped detention.
Did you honestly think that in this situation I would fail to notice that you hadn't turned up?
That I wouldn't ask your mum why she didn't call in that you were sick?
That she wouldn't go half-mad with worry when she realized that you had somehow disappeared on the five-minute walk to school? That she wouldn't go over every detail that she could remember about this morning? Wondering why you had carefully styled your hair and whether you had taken any clothes and run away or met up with some boy you'd chatted with on facebook?
It shouldn't have been a surprise that when you returned - apprehensively because you knew that you'd been found out - it all unravelled and then your partner-in-crime's parents got involved, too, after your mother informed them about your little expedition.
I know that you're in a world of trouble now and as a former teenager I feel for you. I get that you want more freedom and that you're locked in the teenage struggle.
But if you're not in school today or tomorrow or the next day after that, be sure I'll be on the phone.
