This was going to be a post poking fun at my dad and his fear of computers, but as it turns out I'm not up with modern technology myself...

See, my dad's a photography buff and last year he was finally coerced into going digital for his everyday snaps - he got a fairly basic digital camera from his sister-in-law. He's been using this quite happily, going to the shop down the road to have his pictures printed out - and somehow he is managing to work the machine for that. I should add that my dad is not the most technically savvy person around, though he does like certain gadgets but they're only ever the really quirky kind, for example a digital vernier calliper or a laser spirit level.

On Sunday my parents went to some kids' stuff jumble sale where they spotted something that they think we might like to have. So, we got a phonecall and we said, yes, that's great, go ahead, buy it, the price sounds alright. There was a short exchange about taking a picture of the item in question with my stepmom's mobile, but I said it wasn't necessary as I trusted my parents with the decision.

Alright, they took their loot home after impulse-buying a second-hand maxicosi carseat that we don't want. Being really pleased with their purchases they wanted to share them with us and so my dad took pictures with his digital camera. He does know the basics of getting his pictures from the camera to my parents' computer and how to write an email, but he's so afraid of making a mistake along the way, that on Monday he went to the shop, printed out two pictures, put them in an envelope and then sent them to us via snail-mail.

They arrived today, which was quick. So I called to say thank-you and to tease him a little about his lack of computer skills. I then found out that my stepmom had actually herself taken two pictures with her mobile's built-in camera and sent them to me. I didn't know because my mobile is almost always switched off. Also, my cell phone doesn't know how to do pictures, so I had to look at them on the internet (where I could easily save them to my hard disk which is a plus, I think). But yes, I could have seen the pictures on Sunday evening....

So, long story, but two conclusions: My father might not know how to send an email with a picture from his own camera, but then I'm totally behind the times as far as mobile phones are concerned - and my parents aren't.
