Last August I noticed an unusual plant between the cracks of the pavement in my street.

Now it's back and grown a lot bigger:

If it weren't for the neighbourhood dogs' legs and the exhausts of the parked cars pointing right at the pretty leaves, I'd make rocket pesto tonight from a recipe in one of my favourite cook books.

What is that an oak-leaf lettuce? Looks like a parsely off to the right. But what is wrong about dogs and exhaust? Both are fertilizers. And the worst washes off.

Rocket, Italian rucola, German Rauke is what Americans call arugula - though I've just had a look around wikipedia and now know that while the plant in the picture (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmalblättriger_Doppelsame) above is often sold as rucola in Germany, it's not technically the same as Eruca sativa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruca_sativa).

The other stuff is just a weed that looks a bit like parsley.
