Mar. 17th, 2009 04:24 pmI went shopping yesterday with my stepmother and why is it that I don't feel comfortable using that word because it just won't lose its negative connotations of fairly tales and Cinderella? My father's second wife sounds even worse as a description, so with people who know my family background I usually just use her first name. That's nicer and more personal anyway.
Right now, there is only one pair of jeans that don't feel extremely uncomfortable and the next possible shopping date would have been in four weeks, so it had to be yesterday. Anyway, we took the subway (it was my first time back in the city centre since before Christmas) and had a look around the shops. We hit H&M first and I guess you all know the experience with queueing for the changing rooms, which granted are big and well-lit, and sales staff who spend their time folding the untidy heaps of clothes left behind by the hordes of shoppers. There were three basic shirts - grey, black and blue, a nice top, two bras and a pair of those weird maternity jeans. Then - after our well-earned lunchbreak - we went to one of the last traditional non-chain stores where a very nice lady in her sixties helped me find trousers that fit and that I can hopefully grow into. Now I'm wondering whether that same nice lady was also the one who assisted me and my dad when we used to go there for my pre-teen clothing needs. You see, their main line is baby and children's clothing and maternity wear is just their third leg, so to speak. The experience then and now has one typical statement in common: You'll grow into that.
Today, there was a walk in the park and I can now report that the daffodils are starting to open up where it's sunny enough. It definitely feels like a spring day and I'm going to pretend that I didn't read anything about the possibility of snow showers on Friday. The sun and blue skies only properly came out when we got back home, but you can't have it all, can you?
I can feel that all the exercise is good for me. For the next few days, I'm planning a trip to the central library, which is in walking distance from here, though I'll get K to pick me up afterwards - I'm not going to carry a ton of books around.

Date: 2009-03-17 04:43 pm (UTC)Yes, doing stuff is so much better than being stuck inside. But being inside and looking at the blue sky outside the window is good, too (which I'm doing right now).

Date: 2009-03-17 07:35 pm (UTC)One thing though: you never grow into maternity trousers. They should fit from the first time. Big Sis bought a pair one size up from her regular size and they never quite fit. It's your bump that grows, not the rest of your body.
I did end up buying trousers at H&M though, when my belly finally was big enough to make sure they didn't fall down. (And in the end my not too big belly thought the trousers were too small...)

Date: 2009-03-17 08:28 pm (UTC)Oh, they fit now around the hips and thighs, but they're adjustable around the waist and allow a little more room. We actually talked about you and your bad luck with H&M! You must have mentioned that to me at some point. Most trousers just fell down for me, too, but they had some skinny hipster type jeans that worked. The other shop had the expensive stuff - but nice sales lady only showed me the ones on sale, so I bought a pair that was even cheaper than the one at H&M!
