Between the years.
Dec. 29th, 2008 07:30 pmThe period between Christmas and the New Year is sometimes known here as zwischen den Jahren, between the years. There are all sort of superstitions attached to these days, but right now the only one I remember is that my greataunt would not do any laundry, because that meant bad luck somehow.
I guess that kind of belief was very popular because it meant that poor wives and the servants of the rich wives got a bit of a holiday from washing in the middle of winter..
It is a time of transition and I feel neither here nor there.

Date: 2008-12-29 07:13 pm (UTC)It is a time of transition isn't it? I said almost the same thing - much, much, much less poetically. But it just feels like time out. Not really working yet, just sort of being here. But I love the phrase "between the years". Beautiful.

Date: 2008-12-30 11:41 am (UTC)I think that washing in modern washing machines doesn't count. (Yes, my greataunt did have a washing machine, but she was stuck in the past anyway.)
I really should be tackling the marking waiting for me on my desk, but I'm still enjoying the lazy inbetween stage...

Hmm, I don't think I can do postpone the marking any longer - I've got too many piles waiting for me... I did some on Saturday and I really should continue today.
