I really should be ironing and packing and sorting out things to take on my trip tomorrow, but I can't say no to a language meme.

1. a flowing body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks: Bach or Flüsschen which is the diminutive form of Fluss = river

2. the thing you push around the grocery store: Einkaufswagen or short - if it's clear what I'm talking about - just Wagen

3. a metal container to carry a meal in: Henkelmann but these things have gone out of fashion

4. the thing that you cook bacon and eggs in: Bratpfanne

5. the piece of furniture that seats three people: Sofa or Couch

6. the device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof: Regenrinne

7. the covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening: They're not usually covered, but Terrasse or Veranda

8. carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages: Softdrinks or Nicht-alkoholische Getränke which would cover juice as well, possibly also Limo, which is short for Limonade

9. a flat, round breakfast food served with syrup: Not that we would eat them for breakfast or put syrup on them, but Pfannkuchen though in Berlin that's something else again!

10. a long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself: ein (belegtes) Baguette or depending on the bread ein (belegtes) Ciabatta

11. the piece of clothing worn by men at the beach: Badehose

12. shoes worn for sports: Turnschuhe or in fashion-speak Sneaker

13. putting a room in order: aufräumen

14. a flying insect that glows in the dark: Glühwürmchen

15. the little insect that curls up into a ball: No idea!

16. the children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down: eine Wippe

17. How do you eat your pizza? Mit Messer und Gabel oder mit den Fingern

18. when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff: Usually only done in market form - Flohmarkt

19. the evening meal: Abendessen or Abendbrot

20. the thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are: Keller

21. the thing that you can get water out of to drink in public places: We don't have them.

22. the end of the bread that you tend to cut off: There are lots of German (dialect) words for the Randstück. My family is from all over the place, so we use Knust, Renft and Kanten.
