Brandenburg Gate.

sister_luckSo, you've seen the Brandenburg Gate and decided it was a lot smaller than you expected, so apart from its symbolic value when it was closed due to the city being split in half, it's irrelevant which means that you can safely ignore it on subsequent visits?
Yes, that's what I thought.
City marketing made me see the light. (Pun intended.)
When we walked through the Gate from the back we noticed lots of people with cameras and tripods. We knew there was some sort of Festival going on with Lights, but we weren't quite prepared for a Brandenburg Gate with roses:
Wow! Cool! The kids exclaimed. Then it was time for the rainbow version:
They liked it but I think the symbolism went over most of their heads.
That said, this display wasn't exactly a statement of diversity, but more a marketing instrument.
There were pretty pictures, sure:
Even video sequences of the city's skyline being transformed:
Greetings sent out to Berlin's twinned cities (though I'm wondering about the spelling of at least one):
You can do some landmark spotting in the skylines on the columns.
Not everything was colourful:
This was another video sequence featuring a runner:
I suppose this is about the Berlin Marathon?
This shows you more famous buildings in Berlin including the one that is in the picture:
Then came another video sequence:
And then we got to the marketing:
The writing that you can just about make out reads: "Von Berlin aus Europa entdecken" - the slogan exploring Europe starting from Berlin is a little unfortunate perhaps but what they mean is that Berlin is a great place for tourists to use as a starting point to visit European cities.
