Silves is a town in the hinterland. Mostly known for its castle and its cathedral.

The Moorish castle sitting atop the town - you can't see the houses here, they're all out front.

Inside there was an exhibition on Pirates and they were preparing the grounds for the annual Medieval Fair when the whole town goes back into the past and they re-enact history in the streets.


We walked along the castle walls and looked down towards the river Arade. In the grounds the fountains of the faux-Moorish gardens were switched off, probably in preparation of the festival.

Most of Silves hasn't been spruced up as you can see from the houses on the left.
