Propped up.
Apr. 19th, 2010 06:21 pmAt one point, we wanted to rip out two walls on the first floor, so that we could have a huge kitchen and dining area plus a giant living-room. Father-in-law wasn't keen - he was worried about cracks appearing and the house collapsing - but agreed to have an architect and a structural engineer take a look. Only when they came to assess the building, they weren't really worried about the the first floor walls, and instead discovered that there were serious problems with parts of the old barrel vault cellar, namely that it wasn't barrel-shaped anymore and that the iron beams are mostly rust.
The builder who is supposed to fix this finally got to see the basement on Friday and on Saturday morning he came in and secured the ceiling. He didn't want to wait until Monday...
The first floor is making progress in other ways though: the new plumbing is nearly finished with the electrical wiring, some carpentry and decorating/painting to be done in the next four weeks to six weeks. Because that's when our kitchen arrives.
And then we won't have to do the dishes in the bathroom anymore.
