On Friday two of our friends got married to each other. On Saturday they threw a massive party and it was just the right mix of tradition and individuality.

Even though I only got to bed at 6.30 on Sunday, I'm feeling refreshed this week and I want to cherish the night's memories, so I'm writing them down. (This is going to be somewhat boring for you, but I want to write this down as I remember it.)

S and S are part of the group of friends we made when we were still in high school and though we haven't stayed that close with all of them, we still see each other from time to time - birthday parties, the odd concert because most of the guys are in various band and so on. S and S have moved around a lot, so there's always a big moving party where lots of people chip in and help them haul their furniture around. For their wedding party they got lots of the old gang together with a couple of new people mixed in. It probably helps that their families aren't too big, so there was more room for friends!

S looked radiant in her long cream dress - one of the traditions she couldn't do without. The venue was great, too, not too posh, but certainly not shabby either! The food was gorgeous, a buffet which didn't only offer traditional food (roast beef, duck, rabbit) but also vegetarian options. There was a chocolate fountain, too. The atmosphere was relaxed and even the bride and groom introducing all the guests wasn't cringe-worthy but rather endearing and funny. The mother of the groom gave a nice speech, though the best man stayed silent which I was a little disappointed with. If done well, that's a nice tradition. If done badly, it's more than embarrassing.

It was all very nice, but then it got better. N (who I'll introduce later) asked us all outside because he had organized a present for the happy couple. We gathered behind the restaurant and there were about six biggish tea-lights on the street leading to the carpark. Then we got a brilliant fire-dance performance. It took me a while to recognise her, but the beautiful dancer turned out to be N's sister who was in my yeargroup at school. It was magical.

Then it was time for the cake (oh and before that I witnessed a conversation between the boyfriend and A about his rental Alfa in which he tried to get us to talk him out of buying a second-hand version of the car and we kept referencing TopGear, but I guess you had to be there). After the cake (made by S's sister with the help of their mum) it was time for dancing.

They had a great dj who played exactly the sort of mix of music I like - he had nearly everything from swing to ska, from the Beatles to the Dead Kennedys, from the Pixies to Molokko and lots of other things in between. I danced and danced and danced and just generally enjoyed myself, especially with B, who is N's partner. N could be considered my tragic first love and while we don't see each other often, we feel a genuine affection for each other. I met B at the hen-night a couple of weeks ago and on the train journey back we had to fend off the attentions of a couple of drunk stag-night asshole types. This shared experience told me that I like her very much. We both seem to like dancing and are not afraid to look silly while doing so. I had fun!

I should probably also mention that just before leaving S managed to offload her wedding bouquet on me. She didn't throw it, but instead more or less forced it on me. I'm not sure how I feel about that, especially as her taste in wedding flowers was decidedly non-traditional - white lilies.
