Gibbons.

The gibbons had an enclosure with at least two very tall trees amid some of the more usual structures of zoo life for apes like ropes and wooden climbing frames.

Cork.

I'm still not quite done with the Portugal pictures - I keep posting them to remember the holidays. As there is only one more school day (which we'll spend on a field trip) until the autumn break, I should really post some today! Read more... )

Please indulge me - it's Monday, I'm swamped with work and I want to look at something beautiful.

Market.

Going to the same place three times in a row? A couple of years ago this was the epitome of Spießigkeit for me, boring, unimaginative and narrow-minded.

Well, this year we again returned to Lagos in Portugal, but my excuse is that it is a great place and we still hadn't seen everything.

For instance, we hadn't been inside the municipal market, an unremarkable building from 1924. More here )

Living statue actually has a life!

In this popular square in Lagos you often find two statues. One depicts Sebastian of Portugal, King of Portugal and the Algarves, who succeeded to the throne at the age of three and died on an extremely foolish crusade, aged 24. (You will not be surprised to hear that this particular statue, as with most public art, wasn't received favourably. That said, I've seen better.)

Legend has it that he will return one day to save the country.

The other statue is definitely alive. Read more... )

Golden Bay.

Our first holiday in Lagos, Portugal was in 2007. In 2013, we returned with kid in tow. Things hadn't changed much, but the ruin of the never-finished hotel above the bay was about to get a second chance.

Someone had put up a huge banner to advertise the potential of the place:

As you can see in the mock-up picture the building has two parts and it is actually L-shaped with a walkway above the road connecting both. Read more... )

Hotel Golfinho.

Back when we first on holiday in Lagos in 2007 we stayed in a hotel just above Praia Dona Ana, the most famous of the picturesque rocky beaches of the town. A little further up the road there were building works - a large apartment building had just been finished and they were refurbishing the old hotel next to it. Or so it seemed - they were removing all the furniture and fittings which led to quite a bit of noise, but was fascinating to watch.

Exposé

Prompts are a great way of getting you to think about your snapshots. You must find a connection and can't just post beach picture 15. (Not that I took many pictures of beaches this time, though there are still too many doors & doorknockers on my hard drive.)

Exposé really got me thinking.
I could have gone the real estate route - showcasing a particular place which is now mostly in ruins, but used to be a very desirable residence a long, long time ago, but I know that this is not quite what [livejournal.com profile] comava had in mind.

Wistful.

The kid took this - my contribution is minor tinkering to attempt a more level horizon & some slight cropping.

I'm very busy with school and when I look at this picture I'm indeed "thinking sadly about something that you would like to have, especially something in the past that you can no longer have" - as this definition says.
