Defiance and religious pictures.

Did anyone else watch Defiance last night? It got a near-simultaneous start in several parts of the world thanks to SyFy. I caught the last twenty minutes or so and thought it was rather predictable. It felt like a very American narrative to me (circle the wagons and all that).

Here is an image showing Mallorca's most famous religious men:

Both have only been beatified, so they're not quite saints.

Raimundus is the earlier of the two, Ramon Llull in full, a fascinating philosopher who wrote the first major work of Catalan literature and is sometimes considered a pioneer of computation theory.

Juniperus is Junípero Serra, "best known for establishing the chain of Roman Catholic Franciscan missions in California, stretching from San Diego to San Francisco".

I'd like to think that there is a Buffy connection - wasn't there something about 'Spanish missions' and such? He probably is the founder of Sunnydale, too.

Here is the inside of a church with lots of gold and splendor and bare brick:

Kid dragged us inside and we lit a candle, too, for his Grandmother.
He was a little freaked out though by waxy figure of saint with bloody wounds in glass case - I don't think I've seen these around the Catholic churches that I've been to but we saw a couple in different churches.

And as a last picture because we talked about Holy Week earlier:

There were still palm leaves on many balconies from Palm Sunday's blessing/procession.
