Maar II.

After walking half-way around Schalkenmehrener Maar, it was time to tackle the next maar which is called Weinfelder Maar after a small chapel plus cemetery left over from a village abandoned in the 16th century because of the plague. Alternatively, it is also known as Totenmaar or Maar of the Dead.

And right away, the atmosphere is different - it also didn't help that the blue skies had given way to grey clouds:

Saturday a week ago.

A week ago on Saturday we took out the bikes for the first excursion of the year.

The weather was so beautiful and we didn't want to go on Sunday when everyone else was going to be outside.
We headed off in a different direction this time, because we were hoping the kid would be able to handle a longer trip. (He was great.)

Nostalgia.

Yesterday we added to our carbon footprint by driving in the car to a village in the middle of nowhere where we boarded a narrow-gauge steam train to travel to another tiny village where we walked around 15 minutes and then we went back by train again.

The grandparents were happy. The kid enjoyed it. My brother loved it.

Weilburg.

Weilburg, the city of my father's childhood, is a place we visit about once a year, usually in spring.

This year we made it up to the town centre with a famous castle/palace ensemble which does not have an English wikipedia article - I am genuinely shocked at this oversight.

Zons.

Last Sunday the weather was stunning - blue skies, sunshine - a much needed improvement after lots of proverbial April weather with rain and even hail.

Ignoring the desk and the clutter we decided to do some local sight-seeing, visiting a place that the kid had not seen yet. Zons is an old fortified town by the Rhine.

Last weekend they had a medieval market and fair which also included the re-enactment of a famous battle.
We did not witness the battle, but still had a very good time in the sun.

Hamburg Speicherstadt

It seems like ages ago that we went on a mini-break in the L├╝neburger Heide and then on the last day made the trip up to Hamburg, where much to my shame I had never been. We didn't see that much of the city, but managed to visit a couple of landmarks as well as the Miniatur-Wunderland.

You've already seen the Elbphilharmonie.

Now it's time for the Speicherstadt, the warehouse district of the port of Hamburg built in the late 19th century on timber-pile foundations.

The Americans (ep. 1+2)

Oh yes, once again, I'm about three years late in starting a TV series.

Last night it was the pilot and the second episode of The Americans and as I'm conflicted about it, I am throwing some of that out here. Spoilers for episode 1 and  )

Not this Sunday.

Spent most of the day deskbound.

A while ago on a grey October Sunday we did manage to leave the house - just in time to catch the last demonstration of a working water-mill.

Layers.

Indulge me - I need a break from marking and that's the perfect excuse to go through my pictures and post some of my latest.

My town is at or near the top of all sorts of negative lists - most of them signs of deprivation - like the number of people on benefits, teenage pregnancies and so on.

But - and I wish I had proof of it - it is probably also one of the towns with a more than average number of public playgrounds. They are reasonably well-maintained and clean, although most of them have equipment that is very old.

Monkey bars,jungle gyms etc. )

Nostalgia.

We are still in the stages of emptying out a big semi-detached house in SmallTown - the in-laws were not quite hoarders, but certainly packrats. You hold onto stuff in case of "bad times". More often than not, this kind of thinking has come down from their parents and grandparents who certainly knew 'bad times' in the shape of the first half of the 20th century. Read more... )

Dig deep.

Sundays are reserved for some fun activity (and while the school year is on, usually some lesson planning).

This week we went into town where the shops were open for the annual festival celebrating the restoration of the tower of the main church. Any excuse will do.

The kid got new shoes and a new suitcase.

Then we exchanged two bikes for three and cycled to the next event.
