On Sunday we went to a local design & upcycling market - they have a summer version (Greta) and a winter version (Claus).

This year the theme was "Alice in Wonderland" - seven-year old Greta was celebrating her un-birthday.

We are still in the stages of emptying out a big semi-detached house in SmallTown - the in-laws were not quite hoarders, but certainly packrats. You hold onto stuff in case of "bad times". More often than not, this kind of thinking has come down from their parents and grandparents who certainly knew 'bad times' in the shape of the first half of the 20th century. Read more... )

Go and watch this:

(You will probably have to go through an ad for the newest oh-so-brilliant-not-I-phone mobile. Sorry!)

Then tell me whether that's a clever homage or a cheap rip-off. Tocotronic, the German band with intellectual sensibilities, doesn't do much for me, which is mostly due to its reputation. They are being sold as clever, and all I hear is sixties guitars with German lyrics. Or it's the singer's voice, I don't know. This song is catchy enough, not quite as monotonous as some of the other songs I remember.

The video, touted on SPON as paying homage to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, certainly copies several iconic shots - the red leather jacket seems familiar, too. What does it mean though? I just don't get it.

I mentioned in my short Avengers post that I had read a German review with which I had some issues for exhibiting cluelessness.

The reviewer mentioned that the requisite big action sequence is set in "disaster film capital number one New York":

Dass in New York mal echte Wolkenkratzer einstürzten, scheint das US-Action-Kino inzwischen völlig verdrängt zu haben.

Here he is accusing the film (and its viewers) of having forgotten about 9/11 when real skyscrapers fell and in the next sentence he qualifies his statement somewhat by saying that it is silly to criticize the movie-makers for being disrespectful of the dead because this is not a serious film.

Yes, it's a popcorn movie, but how clueless can you get? Does he really think that it does not resonate with Americans when spoilers )

Please, Mr Critic, you don't need to leave your brain behind when watching a movie about superheroes, especially if it is one directed and written by Joss Whedon.

Not quite coherent enough for a full review, but here is my reaction with a few comments thrown in.

Spoiler-freeish )

As a whole: Popcorn movie at its best.

Epiphany.

Title may seem like hyperbole, but like we say in German: "Es fällt mir wie Schuppen von den Augen":

You may know that I live close to the border to a country that does not butcher films by dubbing them. I have only just realized that they have got cinemas over there that I could visit to watch movies in their original version. (I plead having a small kid and only rarely a babysitter available and being busy and all that as my excuse.)

Yes, The Hunger Games is on today at the convenient time of a quarter to eight. Guess what else I stumbled upon? Tomorrow on Friday 13th there's a pre-premiere showing of The Cabin in the Woods and another one on Saturday and Sunday. Sadly it's the late show at 11 - which is a little late for me...

Edited because I mangled CitW's title.

Kid and his dad brought LEGO catalogue home from the shops yesterday: includes Avengers (Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man)

In other news: School still stressful.

Interesting reading on a Friday afternoon: The Drama! Teen Conflict, Gossip, and Bullying in Networked Publics
While the term drama hasn't really made it over here, I see that kind of behaviour all the time.

Wank seems to be the fandom version of drama - or at least closely related to it.

Two shirts in two weeks:

A home-made Blue Sun t-shirt worn by one of my female students. She's a huge fan.

A t-shirt with the words "Let's be bad guys" seen on a random guy at the fun fair. Probably not actually connected to fandom.

I was tagged by [personal profile] distractogirl for the happiness meme:

1. Post about something that made you happy today even if it's just a small thing.
2. Do this everyday for eight days without fail.
3. Tag eight (or as many as you want) of your friends to do the same.

So, what with having a new baby, this is going to be slightly sappy on a good day and slightly odd on a sleep-deprived day. Here goes:

The boyfriend husband and father, playing the guitar and the baby on my lap calming down and falling asleep.
Finding time for a snack and the internet without having a baby attached to me.
Dr. Horrible Wins an Emmy. Further proof.

The tagging business:
