Laach Lake

In German Laacher See - or Lake Lake, as Laach is from Old High German lacha - which is related to English lake of course.

Maar III.

I am starting this with a map of the three maars in Daun:

Maar.

You may know the common German word for lake, which is der See. Yes, it looks a lot like sea, but that's more commonly known as das Meer unless you're being poetic and then you can call it die See. German is NOT straightforward - a claim I've heard recently and which I find a little naive.

To make it all the more complicated there is also das Maar, which is a special kind of lake (and even that is not always true).

The word derives from the dialect of the Eifel region for the lakes of the region and in its most scientific definition it pertains to a broad, low-relief volcanic crater caused by a phreatomagmatic eruption (an explosion which occurs when groundwater comes into contact with hot lava or magma). Thanks, wikipedia! Often, these craters fill with water and then you get a Maar lake, but they also dry out (on their own or through human intervention) and then they become known as dry maars or Trockenmaare.

Among the most famous Maare are three lakes situated in close proximity in the Eifel near Daun. Here is one of them, the Schalkenmehrener Maar named for the village of Schalkenmehren which you can see in the background.

Saturday a week ago.

A week ago on Saturday we took out the bikes for the first excursion of the year.

The weather was so beautiful and we didn't want to go on Sunday when everyone else was going to be outside.
We headed off in a different direction this time, because we were hoping the kid would be able to handle a longer trip. (He was great.)

Autumn picture dump.

Autumn at the playground.

Took the bikes out yesterday and had a look at a playground that we hadn't been to. The kid got a handy little map at school showing all the best spots in town, so there was a new place to discover.

Kid liked it - I didn't think it was that spectacular but one of the better-maintained ones around.

While the kid played, I took my first real autumn pictures of the season.

Nostalgia.

Yesterday we added to our carbon footprint by driving in the car to a village in the middle of nowhere where we boarded a narrow-gauge steam train to travel to another tiny village where we walked around 15 minutes and then we went back by train again.

The grandparents were happy. The kid enjoyed it. My brother loved it.

Weilburg.

Weilburg, the city of my father's childhood, is a place we visit about once a year, usually in spring.

This year we made it up to the town centre with a famous castle/palace ensemble which does not have an English wikipedia article - I am genuinely shocked at this oversight.

Zons.

Last Sunday the weather was stunning - blue skies, sunshine - a much needed improvement after lots of proverbial April weather with rain and even hail.

Ignoring the desk and the clutter we decided to do some local sight-seeing, visiting a place that the kid had not seen yet. Zons is an old fortified town by the Rhine.

Last weekend they had a medieval market and fair which also included the re-enactment of a famous battle.
We did not witness the battle, but still had a very good time in the sun.

Snowday.

We'd had a sprinkling of snow on Saturday, but nowhere near enough to go sledding. My parents, living a good 300m higher, had more snow and had been promised more, so that we decided to drive up on Sunday. Which we did.

(I still don't like how I have to keep telling myself that it was absolutely justified to take the day off and postpone some of my very important marking.)

The grown-ups had fun, too, and did their fair share of sledding, too.

Hombroich.

I took yesterday off - I've only got one more straggler to mark and I'm more or less on top of my planning - because the weather was gorgeous and my back and shoulders definitely couldn't take another day at my desk.

We spent the afternoon at Insel Hombroich, a museum, an island, a park, a place to experience the seasons, modern art and ancient artefacts in parallel to nature. It is not an island in the geographical sense, it is not in actual fact surrounded by water, but situated close to a river and its flood meadows.

I did not take my big camera, which was far too much weight for my neck, so all pictures were taken with my crappy little mobile phone camera.

Summer holiday: boat trip. (So long and thanks for all the fish)

Please indulge me - it's Monday, I'm swamped with work and I want to look at something beautiful.

Market.

Going to the same place three times in a row? A couple of years ago this was the epitome of Spie├čigkeit for me, boring, unimaginative and narrow-minded.

Well, this year we again returned to Lagos in Portugal, but my excuse is that it is a great place and we still hadn't seen everything.

For instance, we hadn't been inside the municipal market, an unremarkable building from 1924. More here )

Going south.

As is tradition around this time of year, we went on the motorway and visited family in Hesse. Text and pictures )

This time there we didn't go for the sights and while I had wanted to take the kid to the very famous castle, we of course didn't. You don't mess with tradition.

Edited for spelling picnic the German way.

Sundays.

Yes, this is getting repetitive - all I ever do is post pictures of Sunday outings or so it seems.

The weather has been lovely, with some really rather warm days and while the temperatures have dropped somewhat we still have blue skies and sunshine. Very welcome after quite a few grey and rainy days. Hence the greenery is exploding and the birds are doing their thing and the first bees have been sighted, too.

Our Sundays have included a short bike ride along the river, so here are some of the pictures.

Easter Monday.

Family visit to SmallTown on Easter Monday. So very typical in many ways. The waffles we had were really rather dark and the one that was thoroughly burnt? Not thrown out, but eaten - it's that mix of "I am suffering for you" and "I cannot throw away anything resembling food, I still remember people starving". Traumas manifest in little ways. (My family and food? There is some bad stuff there.)

The traditional walk was enjoyable, most of the time, as there was some hiding and finding of eggs, of the dyed and chocolate variety. The kid got onto us at some point that the same eggs kept turning up again.

Anyway, lots of signs of early spring and some pictures taken:

Easter domesticity post.

Currently I'm on Easter break, much deserved after a crazy marking phase. I spent the first couple of days of break filing teaching materia and sorting out the mess that was the dining room - which had doubled as my study.

We started the spring cleaning and we did Easter things: )

Happy Easter!

Family holiday.

So we went and had a stereotypical family holiday in a holiday park over the Carnival mini-break. We had a cute little house with a freestanding fireplace and two tiny bedrooms. Read more... )
